{"id":2631,"date":"2023-05-25T00:38:23","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T00:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/?p=2631"},"modified":"2023-07-30T21:52:31","modified_gmt":"2023-07-30T21:52:31","slug":"earthmoving-equipment-learn-how-it-is-designed-and-governed-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/earthmoving-equipment-learn-how-it-is-designed-and-governed-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"EarthMoving Equipment &#8211; Learn How It Is Designed and Governed in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earthmoving equipment is just like any other plant and machinery in Australia.\u00a0 They are designed and governed to the Australian Design Standards.<\/p>\n<h3>What are Australian standards?<\/h3>\n<p>Standards are voluntary documents that set out specifications, procedures, and guidelines that aim to ensure products, services, and systems are safe, consistent, and reliable.<\/p>\n<p>They cover a variety of subjects, including consumer products and services, the environment, construction, energy and water utilities, and more.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure they keep pace with new technologies, standards are regularly reviewed by <a href=\"https:\/\/store.standards.org.au\/\">Standards Australia<\/a> technical committees.<\/p>\n<h3>There are three categories of standards:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>International Standards<\/li>\n<li>Regional Standards<\/li>\n<li>National Standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/earth-moving-equipment.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2632 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/earth-moving-equipment.jpg\" alt=\"earthmoving equipment\" width=\"590\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/earth-moving-equipment.jpg 590w, https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/earth-moving-equipment-150x94.jpg 150w, https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/earth-moving-equipment-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iplantmachinery.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/earth-moving-equipment-180x113.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>How do Australian standards affect Earth Moving Equipment?<\/h3>\n<p>With workplace health and safety standards laws and penalties, there is no excuse for any business employee or owner to not beware of their obligations.<\/p>\n<p>Earth-moving equipment is machinery that often works in the hardest of environments and is tasked to do the hardest of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst many Australian Standards are not law, it is best practice for any company to abide by what is in the standard.\u00a0 With earthmoving equipment, there are a few different standards you need to be aware of.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AS2294<\/li>\n<li>AS2951<\/li>\n<li>AS2958<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What about Earth moving equipment brakes?<\/h3>\n<p>AS2958.1 is the standard that governs Earthmoving machinery safety, particularly wheeled machine brakes.<\/p>\n<p>The standard covers specific requirements for brake systems for any self-propelled rubber-tires vehicle such as a backhoe loader, dumper, excavator, grader, loader tractor, or tractor-scraper.<\/p>\n<p>This standard object is to assist equipment designers, manufacturers, dealers, employers, and users of earth-moving machinery, so it minimizes the risk to the health and safety of anyone working with or near earth-moving machinery.<\/p>\n<p>The standard AS2958.1 will give you clear definitions of what brake systems are.\u00a0 As well as how machine mass is calculated. What a Retarder will do, and what the expected stopping distance will be.<\/p>\n<p>It also will cover general design requirements in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>If you buy any earth moving equipment in Australia, you can expect as a bare minimum that its braking will comply with the general design requirements.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s expected that machines will be equipped with a compliant service brake system.\u00a0 As well as a compliant secondary brake system and a compliant parking brake system.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a failure of a single component, the brake system shall provide a machine-stopping capability that will meet the secondary brake system requirements.<\/p>\n<h3>Is your stopping performance correct?<\/h3>\n<p>Earthmoving equipment can be involved in some of the worst accidents on work sites.\u00a0 It is so important to make sure your equipment is well maintained, especially the stopping performance.<\/p>\n<h3>What are the testing conditions and procedures for brakes?<\/h3>\n<p>The great thing about Australian standards.\u00a0 Is that it gives you a very well-defined \u201cwhat to do\u201d to make sure you comply.<\/p>\n<p>AS2958.1 covers things like test courses, machine, and operation expectations.<\/p>\n<p>It also gives the scope procedure for evaluating and monitoring the performance of braking systems.<\/p>\n<p>Things like parking brakes shall be capable of holding the vehicle stationary in a fully loaded condition.\u00a0 While on the steepest grade that it will encounter in both the forward and the reverse directions.
